Employers Share Reasons Workers Skip PPE

Nearly half of employees fail to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), either because they are unwilling or do not see it as necessary, according to a recent employer-focused study.

The research was conducted jointly by the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) and J. J. Keller & Associates Inc. While 70% of participating employers reported that PPE is a regular topic of discussion within their organizations, 75% still experience challenges with employee compliance. The main reasons cited include a reluctance to wear PPE (56%) and the belief that it isn’t required (48%).

Additionally, 36% of employers indicated that some workers feel PPE makes their tasks more difficult.

Other notable findings from the study include:

• Around half of employers struggle to educate staff on critical PPE practices, such as when to use it, proper usage, and its limitations.
• Although more companies are focusing on PPE designed for women, about one-third report difficulty in finding properly fitting options.
• Sourcing PPE in larger sizes is a challenge for 55% of respondents, while 52% face similar issues with smaller sizes.

“Safety professionals are dedicated to protecting employees, but this study highlights ongoing obstacles, particularly in compliance and training,” said ISEA President and CEO Cam Mackey in a press release. “Using these insights, safety managers, manufacturers, and industry leaders can make targeted improvements to PPE programs, ensuring workers have access to well-fitting, high-quality equipment and are consistently trained to use it correctly.”
